Crystal Story - Skill List + Some Tips

11/6/11 by STM1993
Updated 11/6/11

This post is just a little guide / list of hints for the game Crystal Story. I may update this more when I'm less busy and when I've found more of the Legendary items (they are a pain to obtain). Feel free to comment and point out any mistakes.

Skills:
Crystal Story doesn't allow you to have a good description of the skills that you are trying to level up, and some of the descriptions of the skills after you leveled them are at best, vague. So here I'll list out every skill and describe it in a clear manner.

MDef is Magic Defense in case you didn't know.
All physical attacks, even if they have to be cast like Omnislash, are affected by the accuracy stat.
Magic attacks always hit; they have not affected by the accuracy stat.
Magical Buffs and Ailments also always hit, they are only affected by the target's resistance. So the attack itself can miss but the status effect is still inflicted.

Magical Buffs include:
Attack Up
Magic Up
Defense Up
MDef Up
Haste
Aim (I've never seen this buff before)
Weak (basically Attack Down)
Magic Down
Defense Down
MDef Down
Slow

Ailments include:
Poison
Blind
Confuse (I've never seen this buff before)
Stun

Sleep is most likely under Ailment as it is can't be dispelled.
Silence is probably under Magic Buffs.

Common Skills:
Fighter: Tristam, Phoebe, Reuben
Attack Up - Increases Attack of 1 player
Roar - Lower Attack of 1 enemy
Shear - Lower Magic of 1 enemy
Attack Up All - Increases Attack of all players
Battle Cry - Lower Attack of all enemies
Wind Shear All - Lower Magic of all enemies

Rogue: Tristam, Kaeli, Phoebe
Haste - Increase Speed of 1 player
Armor Break - Lower Defense of 1 enemy
Haste All - Increase Speed of all players
Armor Break All - Lower Defense of all enemies

Mage: Tristam, Kaeli, Reuben
Magic Up - Increase Magic of 1 player
Spirit Break - Lower MDef of 1 enemy
Slow - Lower Speed of 1 enemy
Dispell - Remove all magical buffs of a single target (both friend/foe)
Magic Up All - Increase Magic of all players
Spi Break All - Lower MDef of all enemies
Slow All - Lower Speed of all enemies
Mass Dispell - Remove all magical buffs from EVERYONE (friend and foe)

Healer: Kaeli, Phoebe, Reuben
Heal - Heal 1 player. Can be used out of combat
Harden - Increase Defense of 1 player
Raise - Revive 1 player. Can be used out of combat
Silence Attack - Physically attack AND Silences 1 enemy
Shell - Increase MDef of 1 player
Cure - Remove Ailments from 1 player
Heal All - Heal all players. Can be used out of combat
Harden All - Increase Defense of all players
Shell All - Increase MDef of all players
Regen - Give 1 player the ability to heal a small amount of health whenever it is his turn. (works very similarly to poison)
Greater Heal - Heal 1 player a bit more than Heal. Can be used out of combat.

Player-specific Skills
Healer: Kaeli, Phoebe, Reuben. I decided to lump all the healers' skills here.
Regen All - Only Reuben has this. Grants Regen to all players.
Cure All - Phoebe and Reuben have this. Remove Ailments of all players.
G Heal All - Kaeli and Phoebe have this. Its Heal All with extra healing.

Clear State - Kaeli's level 30 heal. "Prepares 1 player for battle" by removing negative status effects while giving Attack Up, Magic Up, Defense Up, MDef Up and Speed Up.
Holy Light - Phoebe's level 30 heal. Heal 1 player to full health and cures ailments.
Healing Water - Reuben's level 30 heal. Heals all players, grants all players Regen as well as MDef up and Defense up.

Tristam:
Fighter:
Flame Strike - 1 enemy magic attack
Slice and Dice - 1 enemy physical attack
Enrage - Gives Tristam Attack Up, Magic Up and Haste
Omnislash - Perform at most 6 physical attacks against random living enemies. Can hit the same enemy more than once.

Rogue:
Burst - 1 enemy magic attack
Smoke Grenade - Inflict blind on 1 enemy
Unst Explosion - Basically Burst, but with a chance of throwing more than 1 grenade and against random enemies. Can hit same enemy more than once.
S Smoke Grenade - Inflict blind on all enemies
Reinforce - Gives Tristram Attack Up, Defense Up, MDef Up and Haste.
Rocket Launcher - Basically Unst Explosion, but with a MUCH better chance of shooting multiple missiles and each missile can Stun.

Mage:
Fire Bolt - 1 enemy magic attack
Flame Wall - All enemies magic attack
Lava Burst - 1 enemy magic attack. High damage.
Rain of Fire - All enemies magic attack. High damage.

Kaeli:
Rogue:
Double Shot - Physical attack 1 enemy twice
Tranq Shot - Physical attack 1 enemy and cause them to Sleep.
Scatter Shot - Physical attack all enemies.
Lullaby - Put all enemies to Sleep.
Cyclone - All enemies magic attack.
Quickshot - Perform at most 6 physical attacks against random living enemies. Can hit the same enemy more than once. (yes, this is basically the same as Tristam's Omnislash)

Mage:
Lightning Bolt - 1 enemy magic attack
Storm - All enemies magic attack
Static Charge - All enemies magic attack, can cause Stun.
Typhoon - All enemies magic attack. MASSIVE damage.

Phoebe:
Fighter:
Bash - 1 enemy physical attack. No, it does NOT stun, it just hits a bit harder than your usual attack.
Impale - 1 enemy physical attack. It has a chance to stun.
Shockwave - All enemies physical attack. Has a chance to stun.
Quake - Same as Shockwave, but the damage is much higher.

Rogue:
Poison Attack - 1 enemy magic attack. Inflicts Poison.
Darkness Attack - 1 enemy magic attack. Inflicts Blind.
Poison Nova - All enemies magic attack. Inflicts Poison.
Dark Shroud - All enemies magic attack. Inflicts Blind.
Root - 1 enemy magic attack. Inflicts Poison AND Stun.
Outbreak - All enemies magic attack. Inflicts Poison, Blind, Sleep (it gets override by Stun), Stun and Slow.

Reuben:
Fighter:
Frost Strike - 1 enemy magic attack.
Howling Blast - All enemies physical attack. Can inflict Slow.
Piercing Blow - 1 enemy physical attack. Can inflict Slow. Hits very hard.
Triton's Wrath - Deal physical damage to all enemies 3 times, adding up for massive damage. Also inflicts Slow.

Mage:
Ice Bolt - 1 enemy magic attack.
Blizzard - All enemies magic attack.
Icy Chill - All enemies magic attack. Can inflict slow.
Winter's Grasp - 1 enemy magic attack. Can inflict slow. Hits very hard.

Bahamut's(small blue dragon) Monster Disk - Gives all players Attack Up, Magic Up, Defense Up, MDef Up. Yup, all those status buffs except Haste. If I'm not wrong Bahamut also gives Regen.

Bunch's(skeleton lich) Monster Disk - Cast a spell that attacks all enemies. And this spell hits even harder than your characters can.

Fury(a purple guitar?) Monster Disk - Cast a spell against a single enemy (yup, Fury's disk is crap).

Feeding the Slime
I've yet to get the exact formula, but so far what I've learned from feeding the slime:
* You need to feed the slime 5 times.
* Quality and type of food being fed will influence the object being spawned. If you give your slime only high quality food, then most of the time he'll give Legendary items or stat boosting potions.
* However, the exact object you obtain from feeding is completely random. Thus, you can feed the slime the same recipe (eg: 5 Broken Armor) and it gives you completely different items
* It seems that mixing every single high quality food will have a higher chance of getting you stat-boosting potions. Wolf blood also seems to have a tendency to give you potions rather than weapons.

My Tips/Notes:
* Tristam is only good against single targets or at most 2 enemies. His best class is Fighter(because of Omnislash), followed by Mage(Flame Wall is going to be very helpful as it is his only "All enemies" attack) and finally Rogue(because his main attacks are too chance-based). Make sure Tristam gets lots of attack and accuracy.

* Kaeli has the highest magic capability of all the characters. As a Mage she'd have the highest damage output and can control the crowd. As a Healer, she has the biggest advantage in that "Heal All" is available to her at level 10 as opposed to 18 and 15 in Phoebe and Reuben respectively, and having a high magic capability also means her Heal is going to be extremely effective. Which is also the reason why greater heal sucks; the amount healed is based on your magic stat and if you have a high magic stat you can basically heal to full health without even using Greater Heal. For Rogue, her physical attacks will be overshadowed and rather weak, though her Sleep status effect is an effective alternative to stun (just don't use physical attacks, or it'd wake the monster up).

* Phoebe is pretty much an underpowered and overshadowed character. Her healing capability is rubbish. As a Fighter, she'd only be useful when she gets Shockwave and Quake (so that she can hit multiple enemies + stun enemies). As a Rogue, she'd only be useful when she gets Root and Outbreak (for the stun). Poison isn't that useful once you realize that your teammates will eventually have a damage output so high that dragging battles for poison to work is just unnecessary. It doesn't help that bosses have a high resistance to poison and they have at least 2 lives (where during the 2nd life, whatever status effects they got from the 1st life is removed).

* Reuben will make an excellent fighter with a good crowd-clearing and single-target attacker. He'd also work quite well as a Healer (especially when he gets Healing Water), but not so useful as a Mage. Howling Blast is one of the best skills in the game as it allows Reuben to hit multiple enemies for good damage while inflicting slow, all at a lower mana cost than other similar skills and best of all is available once you're level 10 in Fighter. Reuben's Piercing Blow is very effective against bosses. Healing Water is extremely useful when fighting bosses when you need all that defense you can get to stay alive in just one cast.

* Weapons that give BOTH Attack + Magic are the best. For mages, it gives them a backup when they can't use their magic effectively. For fighters, it gives them a much larger mana capacity so that they can constantly use their high damage skills while still dealing a good amount of damage.

* Explore the whole map. Its worth it to get the whole map revealed to you permanently + you get to kill every single monster in the dungeon for extra exp + get better items (don't worry, they respawn when you exit the level). Take note that every 2 levels, you'd meet with a king monster and access a Warp portal. If you have explored the whole dungeon but are too lazy to get to a warp portal, then use the teleport scroll to get away.

* You should go back to town and sell useless stuff every 2 levels, otherwise your bag will eventually get full (the game will start showing "Equipment Slots: 101"on your screen when you are reaching full capacity and explicitly tell you when you are full). Useless items include: Monster Skills (except Bahamut and Bunch, those two are excellent for bosses), any equipment that is white or green, those yellow potion stuff like coffee (exception: those that increase your stats permanently should be used immediately, not sold. Also, stuff like coffee, although useful at situations, are rarely needed, that's why I suggest selling them anyway), low quality and regular quality slime food (save only the high quality ones and only feed those to your slime). Never sell orange(legendary) items unless you have extras that you can't share with the other party members.

* While in town, go upgrade your equipment in the armory. Your equipment can be upgraded up to your current level. Of course, if you managed to get items which are beyond your level, then good for you, you don't need to upgrade. If you need potions, I suggest you buy only mana potions (ethers) since with a healer in your party, he can double as your "healing potion" at the cost of mana.

* Bosses are generally immune to status effects (resistant actually, but so resistant that its just not worth trying), unless the status effect you intend to inflict is Stun, Slow or Blind; these 3 have a higher chance of working. Its better to just buff your own party members than to debuff since enemies can sometimes be resistant or even immune to certain debuffs. For example, crabs are immune to Stun, spiders are immune to Poison.

* The dungeon rooms will randomly have treasure chests. This treasure chest appearance chance is calculated each time you enter the room rather than pre-determined by the game, so you can literally walk to another room and back and see new treasure chests. This also applies if you are engaged in a battle and then win the battle, so you can have a chest that disappears or an originally opened chest being unopened when battle is over.

* You don't have to fight every monster you see. You can just walk past them if you're too lazy to fight them. Just be warned that:
- Don't be surprised if you enter the next room immediately engaged in battle.
- Lurkers (those ninja monsters that can suddenly disappear into shadows) are hostile, VERY fast and react VERY quickly.
- Bats behave similarly to Lurkers, except that they are slower in movement.
- Samurais ARE hostile and have good eyesight. They just react very slowly, but once they react, they move VERY fast.

* The game pre-determines whether there are monsters in a room or not, but does not explicitly determine which monsters are in that room. So if you don't like the monsters in the room, you can just exit the room and re-enter to get a new set of monsters. This is great if you want to avoid the harder enemies, or if you are hunting the big skeletons/birds/wolves/samurais to get high quality slime food from them (shiny bone, feather, wolf blood, broken armor respectively).

* If you ever come across unique monsters (3 types in total: Bahamut, Bunch and Fury), heal up all your players and get them ready for battle and fight them. Unique monsters have only 1 lifebar like normal monsters and the Thief side-quest boss (bosses have 2, Dargon has 3), but that lifebar is longer than usual and they hit hard. Upon killing unique monsters (they always appear alone), they give quite a nice reward and will always drop a monster disk. The Bahamut monster disk is the most valuable as explained above.

* Complete side-quests whenever you can. They are the same as the Random Dungeon feature where you'll get thrown into a 2-floor dungeon with monsters of your current level (2nd floor being a boss floor), only difference is that the side-quests will have scripted bosses and you will be given a +1AP reward.

* There are only 50 floors in the game, the 50th being the Ultimate Dargon boss fight. However, I believe that your level can exceed level 50 - I managed to get a Life Hammer that was level 51. If you ever want to continue grinding beyond level 50, you'll probably want to play Random Dungeons rather than fight in level 49 of the Evil Cave,
